Unmistakably cool climate pinot. Intense yet elegant with velvety tannins and balanced acidity pulling the flavours right through the palate. Starting to show it's full potential as it opens up in late 2010, but also with years of cellaring remaining.
Caroline's Pinot Noir Caroline Plummer was an extraordinary vital young woman of great energy, beauty and elegance. Her passion was the study of dance and its healing values. She assisted in planting of the original block - Caroline's. In 2003 before her untimely death from a rare malignancy she gave her name to the first pinot noir. Caroline's Pinot Noir has become our flagship wine. It is made in the years when the season allows grapes which meet our rigorous quality standards. Ripe fruit, spiciness, savoury aromas satisfying palate weight, minerality, velvet tannins. Extraordinary persistence. Elegance. A wonderful tribute to a wonderful young woman.
Winemaker Jeff Sinnott's Comments:
"At bottling this wine showed great jazzy red and black fruit lift typical of this vineyard. The whole bunch fermentation characters of wild strawberry, cloves & mint are nicely interwoven into beautiful dried herb characters of cool climate pinot. There is nicely understated toastiness from the oak. The palate is fine grained and very intensely flavoured, showing black, slightly plummy fruit with characteristic cherry & cranberry flavours pushing through the mid palate. The wine has a tremendous drive, energy or nervosité with some attractive fruit sweetness balancing elegant acidity and fine sinewy tannins. Palate length is impressive."
