Growing Pinot Noir in the Waitaki Valley

Growing grapes in the Waitaki is not for the faint-hearted.  It is neither easy nor hugely profitable in a monetary sense. Which suits us down to the ground because it has, so far, driven the speculators out of our small corner of paradise. Not that we belong to the “NIMBY” fraternity, it’s just that where commercial imperatives override quality aspirations, it is the wine that ultimately suffers.  We are fortunate in this valley that our colleagues growing grapes and making wi...

Tasting the 2020 vintage

Due to earlier COVID restrictions, our early July visit marked the first time that Jeff and I could actually go inside VinPro in Cromwell where our wines are being made with with great care this year. Jeff has been tasting samples throughout the process, these being brought outside to him to try in splendid isolation in the carpark! It was a treat to talk with the VinPro team and taste all the wines together - Jeff, Tim and I are pictured with Pip Battley, VinPro's head winemaker. We are deligh...

Growing Pinot Gris in the Waitaki Valley

What can be said about pinot gris that hasn’t been said before? We all know it’s a pink skinned mutation of pinot noir, booted out of Burgundy for being impure and reintroduced back into France via Hungary and Germany thanks to General Ruland. We also know it’s an early ripening variety capable of tremendous flavour concentration when treated with respect. We know it is suited to the southern latitudes of New Zealand where it retains all important acidity. What we may not be too aware of i...

Michael Cooper reviews an Ostler selection

We were thrilled to receive the following kind words from highly regarded wine critic Michael Cooper about a selection of our wines. Ostler Audrey's Waitaki Valley Pinot Gris The powerful 2016 vintage ( ★★★★★) is a delicious wine, well worth cellaring. Full-bodied and rich, with notably concentrated peach, pear and spice flavours, gentle sweetness, and excellent complexity and harmony, it should be at its best 2020+ Ostler Caroline's Waitaki Valley Pinot Noir Estate-grown in North Ot...

93/100 for Waitaki Valley Pinot Noir 2017

It's always great to hear others enjoy our Waitaki Valley Pinot Noir as much as we do. Here's what Cameron Douglas MS had to say."A lovely bouquet of Pinot with aromas of limestone and gentle savoury tones, light red fruit aromas of red cherry, plum and raspberry. Oak aromas are gentle with lightly sweet scents of vanilla and baking spices. "Youthful on the palate with a mix of fresh and slightly tart red fruits - these will ease and integrate over the next 1-2 years; fruit flavours match the bo...

Ostler Lakeside among best 25 Pinot Gris in New Zealand

We were absolutely delighted to see Michael Cooper included the Ostler Lakeside Vines Waitaki Valley Pinot Gris 2016 among the best 25 Pinot Gris in New Zealand. Here's what Michael had to say: "An impressive wine that was grown at Lake Waitaki and partly fermented in old oak barriques. It is fractionally sweet, weighty (14.5% alc/vol) and vibrantly fruity, with strong pear and lychee flavours, showing excellent varietal definition, hints of peaches, ginger and spices and a well-rounded finish....

All that Glitters is Gold (Awards!)

When you enter a wine in a competition as prestigious as the International Wine Challenge in London, you enter with trepidation and hope that the people 'in the know' will like it, but also realistic about the plethora of amazing wines that are entered. Even though our 2015 Caroline's was well received at Pinot 2017 in February, the general consensus was that it was still very young (which it is!) and needed to develop a lot more in the bottle. When we did our pre-release specials earlier in th...

Our Gewurztraminer is #1!!

Bob Campbell review our 2015 Gewurz and it came back as his favourite!! We are thrilled at this review and think everyone will love this wine. 'This is the first release of a gewürztraminer from Ostler. An impressively concentrated wine with restrained rose petal, ginger, anise and spice flavours. A dry wine with good acidity assisted by a backbone of very fine tannins. Classy wine with excellent cellaring potential. (2/1/2017) 95/100'...

Ostler Vineyard – Featuring Waitaki Minerality

The Waitaki Valley in North Otago is one of New Zealand's most exciting and newest vignobles. The climate is definitely cool, and the limestone soils require long hang-time for grapes to ripen. The wines from the region show great elegance and a minerality which may be their defining feature and character. Ostler is based on an 8 ha site established by Jim and Anne Jerram with the talented winemaker Jeff Sinnott, who is Anne's brother as partner and winemaker. The first harvest was in 2004. The ...
