Michael Cooper reviews an Ostler selection

We were thrilled to receive the following kind words from highly regarded wine critic Michael Cooper about a selection of our wines.

Ostler Audrey's Waitaki Valley Pinot Gris

The powerful 2016 vintage ( ★★★★★) is a delicious wine, well worth cellaring. Full-bodied and rich, with notably concentrated peach, pear and spice flavours, gentle sweetness, and excellent complexity and harmony, it should be at its best 2020+

Ostler Caroline's Waitaki Valley Pinot Noir

Estate-grown in North Otago, the impressive 2016 vintage (★★★★½) is a powerful young red, deeply coloured. Full-bodied, it has concentrated, ripe, plummy flavours to the fore, hints of herbs and liquorice, a subtle seasoning of oak, and gentle tannins. Best drinking 2020+

Ostler Lakeside Riesling Spätlese

Grown in the Waitaki Valley, North Otago, the 2015 vintage (★★★★★) is a lovely wine. Light-bodied, it is vivacious, with penetrating, citrusy, peachy flavours, gently sweet (29 grams/litre of residual sugar) and mouth-wateringly crisp, and a very long finish.

Ostler Lakeside Vines Waitaki Valley Pinot Gris

The characterful 2017 vintage (★★★★½) was grown at Lake Waitaki and partly (20 per cent) fermented with indigenous yeasts in old oak barriques. A powerful wine, it is full-bodied (14.5 per cent alcohol), with fresh, strong pear and spice flavours, gentle sweetness (14 grams/litre of residual sugar), a distinct touch of complexity and a lingering finish. Best drinking 2020+

Ostler Waitaki Valley North Otago Gewürztraminer

The classy 2017 vintage (★★★★½), part of the 'Grower Selection', was made with a small amount of barrel fermentation. A vibrantly fruity, finely balanced wine, it has a perfumed bouquet and refined palate, showing excellent delicacy and purity. Slightly oily, with gentle sweetness (9 grams/litre of residual sugar), it's a youthful wine, likely to be at its best 2020+
