Media release; 28 November 2020 - Ostler Wines, based in the North Otago township of Kurow, has been awarded a gold medal for the Ostler Caroline’s Pinot Noir 2018 in the prestigious International Wine Challenge (IWC).
This is the sixth consecutive Caroline’s vintage to have been awarded a gold medal since the 2010 vintage in this annual wine competition dubbed ‘The Oscars of the Wine World’.
Produced only in season when the grapes are of the best quality, the Caroline’s Pinot Noir has been awarded golds from the 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2018 years, with two of those achieving trophy status.
The grapes for the acclaimed Caroline’s are grown in the limestone-underpinned vineyard called Clos Ostler near Kurow, the one of several small vineyards developed and managed by Ostler Wines along the Waitaki Valley. The Caroline’s Pinot Noir vines were planted in 2002.
Ostler Wines Managing Director and co-owner Jim Jerram says he believes this record of gold awards from such an important international panel of evaluators is somewhat unusual, and a huge tick of approval for the tiny Waitaki Valley North Otago wine industry.
This year the 2018 Caroline’s vintage was tasted by a panel chaired by Masters of Wine Richard Bamfield MW and Tim Atkin MW whose judging notes said: “This has a lovely smoothness and elegance with its understated red cherry and plum fruit. It’s very harmonious and refined.”
Ostler Winemaker and co-owner Jeff Sinnott says: “We have always believed the distinctive Waitaki regional parameters provide fruit with a distinctive footprint, with limestone terroir and the cool climate there resulting in a unique wine style. Red and dark summerfruit and developing earthy aromatics all with a satisfying mouth fill and finish demonstrating a chalky minerality. Limestone is perhaps the ‘holy grail’ for pinot noir winemakers and provides our signature wine with its special attributes.”
The Ostler Caroline’s Pinot Noir 2018 is among Ostler Wine’s current wine range and can be tasted at their cellar door, The Vintner’s Drop, in Kurow or is available online via their website, www.ostlerwine.co.nz.
