Ostler Lakeside Riesling 2015
"A wine of great focus."
The trick with riesling is to ensure that the acidity and natural fruit sugar are kept in harmony so in some years like 2015 we stop the ferment earlier for the higher residual sugar to balance the acidity the season produces in the fruit.
This wine is more in the German Spätlese, late harvest style. Lowish alcohol keeps the burn at bay and the fruit flavours dance across the palate buoyed by crisp acidity. Aromatically delicate white flower and lemon/lime peel characters are underpinned by mineral salt notes serving to underpin the bouquet.
Similarly, on the palate, ethereal floral esters, then citrus oil flavours of lemons and limes fill the mouth beautifully intertwined with the residual sweetness. This leaves slightly stony mineral characters resolving in a long dry, crisp finish.
The 2015 Lakeside Riesling has the structure and flavour to age well. Already benefitting from 5 years in the bottle, it's drinking beautifully now and has years of cellaring potential if you like aged rieslings.
Food matches: Try it with a blue cheese.
Our Riesling grapes are grown on Paul Sinnott's vineyard, above Lake Waitaki.
Michael Cooper review: Grown in the Waitaki Valley, North Otago, the 2015 vintage (★★★★★) is a lovely wine. Light-bodied, it is vivacious, with penetrating, citrusy, peachy flavours, gently sweet (29 grams/litre of residual sugar) and mouth-wateringly crisp, and a very long finish.
Harvest date: 15 May 2015
Total acidity 9.2, alcohol 9.7%, residual sugar 33 g/L
