Ostler Pinot Gris - Audrey's 2014

This is a particularly rich example of Audrey's, ripe stone fruit, creamy lees and a distinct struck match character from the wild yeast entice the nose. Oak takes a backward role in the wine tending toward rancio rather than toasty. Given that the vines are now 10 years old we are now seeing significant depth of flavour from the limestone sub-strata as the roots are well embedded in the calcareous, marine fossil rich soil. The lees have been used to connect the primary fruit characters with the lovely underlying mineral texture found in this profound site. Audrey's usually starts off as a tightly wound wine with the primary elements seemingly woven into in the structural components of acid, alcohol and tannin. Over time the wine will relax to reveal layers of complex stone, pome and exotic fruit characters knitted in a savoury almost creamy mid-palate supported with soft acidity, a modicum of residual sugar and significant extract. A variety that has many facets but is always intriguing, revealing and in this case ultimately rewarding our belief that the Waitaki is indeed great Pinot Gris country.
