Waitaki Valley Gewürztraminer - 2018
We produce a tiny amount of this beautifully balanced cool-climate style of Gewurztraminer. One of Bob Campbell's favourites. Wonderful texture and subtle aromatics with superb structural balance - the signature of the Waitaki and a great winemaker
Winemaker Jeff says: "Every year we try to think of other ways to express what Gewurz smells and tastes like and every year we come back to the old descriptors. Roses, lychees, tropical and white stonefruit, muscat like grape characters and the classic spice the Gewurz always gives us.
"This year there’s a hint of orange blossom, maybe a touch of mint and even a sprinkling of cinnamon for good measure. In the mouth it is a delight, not quite a heavy as the 2017 in terms of extract, slightly higher in residual sugar, balanced by an extra gram of acid. The entry is soft and slippery and the flavours build while the wine warms in your mouth. A generous, bit not tiring, amount of alcohol adds weight and the phenolics from the skin and lees contact adds texture. That acid helps to keep the palate driving along nicely, finishing with a delightful spicy snap at the end. Flavoursome enough to drink on its own we love it with Asian inspired duck, braised then roast with the whole oriental spice cabinet, some citrus and, dare we say it, lychees."
