Ostler Lakeside Pinot Gris 2018
A luscious and satisfying pinot gris, you will find aromas of spice and ripe stonefruit like nectarine and peach. This medium-dry wine is rich and creamy with a concentrated palate with depth and length.
The Lakeside is made in the style common to the Alsace region of France with grapes grown on Paul Sinnott's spectacular vineyard above Lake Waitaki on a very special Alsace Gris clone, new to New Zealand
The 2018 vintage retains our formula for this wine with 14% alcohol and 14 g/L residual sugar with wonderful balanced acidity.
The Lakeside Pinot Gris 2018 is drinking beautifully now, yet worth cellaring through until 2030.
“This is stunning, complex and engaging. It’s refined and sophisticated with a sense of restraint, finishing impressively long and alluring” – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
“A tangy wine with poached pear, green apple, ginger and oyster-shell-mineral flavours. Nice sweet-and-sour tension and a lengthy finish” – Bob Campbell
Food matches: The higher residual sugar, with good acid and palate weight suggests mild spicy foods – a Thai green curry perhaps, or sweeter seafood such as scallops, crab or scampi.
Jeff’s tasting notes: The colour is a mid-full straw and will turn to rose gold over the next few years. The aromatics are all you would want for in full throttle Alsace style Gris – golden queen peach, vanilla bean, ripe Anjou pear and an almost Gewurz-like spice in the background. Also some pretty serious phenolics and a nice lick of acidity keeping this wine in shape. The mid palate is crammed with layer upon layer of baked fruit, spice, doughy complexity and those fine lacy phenolics that give the wine both energy and drive. Full of flavour, it will deliver drinking pleasure for what we hope to be decades. Try it with ripe, stinky, washed rind cheeses, duck liver parfait or even some lighter not so sweet, baked desserts like our Annie’s Tarte Tartin au Quince – what a treat!
Bob Campbell – 90/100
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit – 95/100
Michael Cooper – 4 1/2 stars
