Ostler Waitaki Valley Pinot Noir 2017 (6 bottle case)
An expressive pinot noir with underlying darker, almost smoky fruit notes balanced beautifully with bright fruit characteristics of red currant, cranberry and raspberry and the typical spiciness of a Waitaki Valley wine. The palate is complex and savoury in a continental style, belying the lighter, brighter ruby tones of this wine in the glass.
Our estate pinot noir comes from grapes grown on several vineyards dotted along the Waitaki Valley. The 2017 season was cool. We cellar all our wines in the bottle to allow them to soften and relax. This 2017 vintage was released in 2019 and has continued to improve with this time in the bottle. Drinking well now through until 2025.
“Gorgeously polished and supple on the palate” – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
“A slightly lighter weighted wine with a youthful energy. Well made” – CameronDouglasMS.com
Food matches: Slow cooked lamb or pork would be delicious, or other red meats.
Jeff’s tasting notes: The colour is a bright ruby garnet with flashes of crimson at the rim. Aromatically this wine is quite expressive showing red currant, cranberry and raspberry fruits with typical Waitaki spiciness and an underlying note of darker fruit. The oak is understated, gently supporting the wine rather than playing a dominant role. In the mouth, the wine shows distinctly varietal cool climate Pinot characters, fine sinewy tannins and a long, tapered finish. It is a style made to enjoy while young with simple, honest bistro food such as slowly braised lamb short ribs or pork cassoulet."
