Ostler Caroline’s Pinot Noir 2018
Aromatically, the 2018 vintage is a classic Ostler Caroline’s Pinot Noir with red and dark fruits, exotic oriental spices and an alluring earthy note.
Savour vibrant primary fruit notes of cherry, raspberry and a satisfying cranberry-like acid crunch. The tannins are fresh and supple, providing structure to the long, lingering finish. In the glass, the wine is a lovely bright ruby, garnet colour with striking purple hues at the rim.
The 2018 season was one of the warmest on record with spectacular fruit-set across our Waitaki Valley vineyards and only the grapes which best fit the Caroline’s style were used.
True to its cool-climate Waitaki heritage, the ’18 Caroline’s needed the two+ years since bottling to open up and allow the complex integration that continues for years. This wine is finer-boned and more beguiling than the big vintage that preceded it in ’16.
Drink now or cellar until 2025.
“Slightly edgy, herbal pinot noir with floral, violet and red cherry. Smooth-textured wine with very slightly peppery tannins and a pleasantly dry finish. A distinctive wine with character.” Bob Campbell
Food matches: Game such as duck, venison or merino back straps but the fineness and elegance will also suit salmon.
Jeff’s tasting notes: At bottling the wine is a lovely bright ruby, garnet colour with striking purple hues at the rim. Aromatically the wine shows all the hallmarks of a classic Caroline’s Pinot Noir. An amalgam of red and dark fruits, exotic oriental spice – clove, nutmeg, anise and an alluring earthy note akin to moss flowing over river stones. In the mouth it shows vibrant primary fruit notes of cherry, raspberry and a satisfying cranberry like acid crunch. The tannins are fresh, supple and supporting providing structure to the long, lingering finish. This is a finer boned version of Caroline’s in the vein of our ‘13 and ’15 rather than the more muscular ‘09, ‘10 or ’16 wines. As usual we suggest decanting as the wine was neither fined nor filtered.
