Ostler Waitaki Valley Pinot Noir 2018
The 2018 vintage of our estate pinot noir showcases regional Waitaki pinot noir aromatics – spicy oak, coffee, red liquorice with underlying layers of plum, cranberry and cherry.
This bright ruby wine is medium bodied with those plum, cherry and cranberry flavours echoing the aromatics. Soft tannins give this wine a savoury edge and instant drinking appeal.
The pinot noir grapes express our wider terroirs of the valley and the hotter-the-average 2018 season meant we were spoilt for choice with quality fruit for winemaking.
We cellar all our wines in the bottle to allow them to open up. This 2018 vintage was released in 2020 and has continued to improve with this time in the bottle. Drinking well now through until 2023.
“Quite a savoury pinot noir with cherry, dried herb, baked-earth and subtle violet flavours.” Bob Campbell
Food matches: Any red meats. Slow cooked lamb or pork would be delicious.
Jeff’s tasting notes: This is a wine that expresses the wider terroirs of the Waitaki Valley. The colour is a bright ruby garnet. It shows distinctive regional Waitaki Pinot Noir aromatics of exotic spicy oak, coffee, red liquorice and layers of satsuma plum, cranberry and cherry fruit underneath. In the mouth the wine is medium bodied but high in flavour with more of those red plum, cherry and cranberry fruit filling the mid palate. Tannins are soft and yielding while also giving the wine a savoury edge giving and instant drinking appeal.
